Celebrated every June—a month chosen to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 that catalyzed the gay rights movement in the United States—Pride Month uplifts LGBTQ+ voices, activism, and culture. It also highlights social and political achievements throughout LGBTQ+ history while acknowledging there is still work to be done.

As vaccinations continue to roll out and the U.S. begins to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, people across the country are ready to celebrate Pride all month long with marches, parades, performances, fundraisers, and other activities.

Whether you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, there are many ways to promote diversity, self-acceptance and social acceptance for all. In addition to participating in the festivities, you can also make a positive impact by supporting businesses that are giving proceeds to Pride causes, or donating to a charity that champions the rights of LGBTQ+ groups.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation

21-year-old college student Matthew Shepard’s murder in 1998 sparked a national conversation about homophobia and crimes against LGBTQ citizens, and helped galvanize social and political action to prosecute hate-based crimes adequately. In the two decades since his death, the Matthew Shepard Foundation has operated with the mission to change hearts and minds, spur changes in legislation, provide training to law enforcement personnel, and open the dialogue to promote a more accepting and safe world for the LGBTQ community.

As the largest LGBTQ civil rights organization in the world, the HRC and its 3 million members commit time and resources to ensure fundamental equal rights for all, and safety and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals within their workplaces and communities. The HRC began as a political action committee (PAC) that directed funds to politicians who supported gay civil rights legislation. Since then, the organization has evolved its political action and legislative roots to host educational and outreach programs such as the Workplace Project, the Family Project, and many social media campaigns to boost the signal for important LGBTQ issues.
